The PS 73 BWK is a proven grinding product for dealing with lacquered surfaces. Its secret is the special coating that prevents the spaces between the grains from becoming clogged.

Anyone who has ever tried to sand down an old window frame at home before repainting it has presumably experienced this: the tenacious residual particles get stuck in the abrasive paper, quickly making it unusable. Wherever the abrasive grains were once noticeable, everything is now gummed smooth. And worse still: the unattractive sanded result often remains visible after repainting. Professionals from the painting and decorating trades, the furniture industry, plastic moulding and even car repair sector therefore turn to special products such as the PS 73 W from Klingspor.

“The W stands for Wirkstoffbeschichtung - or special coating,” explains Wolfgang Kaiser, Head of Test Field and Service in Haiger. “A layer of calcium stearate is applied to the product during the final work process and this reduces clogging.” Different grit sizes – from 40 to 1,500 – cover a wide range of applications. The grinding discs, with the grains that are finer than flour, are used in the automotive industry, because painting faults also affect robots. The result is only perfect once any necessary regrinding of imperfections is complete.

Wind energy is another important area of application, reports the Test Field Manager. The rotor blades have to have an absolutely flat surface. The smallest of dents, resulting from e.g. hail, cause air turbulence that reduces efficiency. When employees carry out repairs to paintwork at height in winds, the long service life of the abrasives and the reduction in set-up times are particularly important.

Innovative development

The innovation hub at Klingspor is therefore running at full power. For two and a half years, a development team has been working intensively on a novel non-stick, polymer-based coating. The innovative product will soon be on the market. “Before we start series production, we will be performing preliminary tests with prototypes – not only in the test laboratory, but naturally also with users in practice. After all, the same rule applies here as in football: it’s what happens out on the field that counts. This is why we want to impress our customers with our real increase in performance,” emphasises Kaiser, revealing the results of the tests so far: “In comparison to similar products, the service life has doubled, depending on the application.”
